Taekwondo Headquarters in Korea Receives HeartSine Defibrillator

The World Taekwondo Headquarters, Kukkiwon, in Korea has received a defibrillator donated by H&D, the authorized distributor of HeartSine® Technologies in Korea.

Earlier this month, H&D donated the HeartSine automated external defibrillator (AED) to Kukkiwon with the promise of promoting the importance of AEDs to their local and international members, which is extremely significant given the fact that Taekwondo is the national martial art of Korea.

The lifesaving device which is now placed in Kukkiwon’s facilities in Seoul, Korea, will ensure all members and visitors are protected with the highest chance of survival, should sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) occur.

Volker Brand, HeartSine Technologies’ Executive Vice President of Sales and Marketing, EU/ROW, which has headquarters in Belfast, Northern Ireland and Pennsylvania, USA, said:

“People frequenting Kukkiwon’s facilities will no doubt be involved with Taekwondo and will therefore most likely enjoy moderate to high levels of fitness.

“The misconception is that fit and healthy people will not be affected by SCA. That is incorrect. SCA is not affected by our age, gender, race, or fitness levels. It can strike anyone at any time and is most commonly caused by an undetected abnormal heart rhythm called ventricular fibrillation (VF).

“SCA also does not take into consideration the location of the victim meaning it could happen in a school, in the gym, in the office, in a shopping centre, walking down the street or even in the home.

“What we do know, however, is the majority of SCA cases across the world will take place outside of a hospital or medical setting meaning convenient public access to defibrillators is crucial. Particularly when you consider that the use of a defibrillator combined with CPR can increase survival rates to over 70% compared to less than 5% which CPR alone.

“Despite the fact that all HeartSine defibrillators are made in Northern Ireland, they are exported to and used in more than 40 countries across the world through our distributor network. I am delighted that members and visitors of Kukkiwon in Korea can now continue their work with the peace of mind that they are equipped with the lifesaving device should the unthinkable occur.”
